Music Does Not Increase Growth

Abstact

To determine if playing music increased the growth of rye grass plants I performed the following experiment. I administered music to the experimental group via a set of headphones attached to my stereo. The music I played was very relaxing and soft music. I played the music for about twenty minutes each time I aministered the I. V. The same music was played every time the music was administered. The two groups were kept seperate at the time of the administering of the I.V. I found that the music did not increse the growth of the experimental group. Actually the plants in the control group had a greater average height than did the eperimental group. I found that the music did not increase the growth of the rye grass.

Introduction

In this experiment I wanted to determine if music increased the productivity and growth of the rye grass seeds. I attempted to prove that the realxing music would increase the growth of the rye grass plants. From this experiment I wanted to infer whether relaxing music causes in an increase in productivity and growth in a more general sense.

Methods

The rye grass seeds used was a mixture Fall Green Grass Seed Mixture from Wonderlawn incorperated. The mixture contained 37% Barverdi rye, 32% Annual Rye, 8% red Fescue, 8% Perenial Rye, and 5% Kentucky Bluegrass. I planted about sixteen of the seeds in each of the containers. I planted the seeds in a containers made from a milk carton cut in half long ways. I filled the containers with potting soil and planted about sixteen seeds in each of the containers. To run the experiment I attached a set of heaphones to the experimental group and attached the heaphones to my stereo. I played relaxing music from a tape I have of sythesized music. I played the music at a twenty minute interval once a day for five days. The two groups were seperated during this time.

Results

I used the Mann Whitney U test to analyze the data. I found the obtained U to 108 and the critical U to be 59. I found that I could not reject my null hypothesis since 108 was bigger than 59. The scores ranged from 3.4 to 13.8. U1 was 108 and u2 was 102.

Discussion

I could not reject the null hypothesis for this experiment, which was the music would not increse the growth of the plants. In analyzing the data I found that the results were opposite of what I was trying to prove. It appears that the music did not increase the growth of the plants like I had predicted. Instead the experimental group was not as tall as the control groups. From this experiment I would infer that music does not have an impact on productivity and growth. Listening to music does not have a bearing on productivity and growth.
